Meet Lucy O’Donoghue – Building a Business on Purpose and People

When Lucy O’Donoghue took the leap from a successful career in PR and membership development to start her own consultancy, she wasn’t following a master plan — she was following her instinct.

Now, through Lucy O'Donoghue Consulting, she supports SMEs, entrepreneurs and organisations with strategic marketing, mentoring and communications, all rooted in trust, authenticity and results.

From EU institutions to Cork’s vibrant business scene, Lucy’s path has been shaped by connection, curiosity and community — values she brings to everything she does.

We’re delighted to welcome Lucy to the AwakenHub community.

Describe yourself in six words or less:
Organised, caring, confident, efficient, people-orientated and thoughtful.

Tell us about your business and what inspired you to start it:
For 12 years I worked at Cork Chamber of Commerce as Membership Development & PR Manager, responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of the membership development programme. I also managed media relations for the Chamber across local and national print, radio and social media.

In 2012, I felt it was time for a change and needed a new challenge. Despite the recession, I took a leap of faith and established Lucy O’Donoghue Consulting. It was a great decision – my previous experience at Cork Chamber, Euro Info Centre and UCC helped open many doors. Today, I am proud to work with amazing SMEs, business organisations, female entrepreneurs, and individuals who continue to challenge and inspire me.

Tell us a little more about you:
I’m originally from Bishopstown and returned to live here in 2020.

After completing my MA at the University of Limerick, I was awarded a prestigious Schuman Scholarship, which gave me the opportunity to work in the European Parliament in Luxembourg. There, I was part of the Social Affairs division and travelled extensively throughout Europe, including time in Berlin and the Irish College in Louvain, Belgium. This experience ignited my love of travel and new cultures.

Back in Cork, I joined the European Information Centre (EIC) as an Information Officer, where I promoted EU institutions and organised seminars. This introduced me to event management, PR and communications.

I then moved to UCC as Alumni Officer, connecting the university with its alumni globally. I organised events in Ireland and abroad, gaining further experience in large-scale event planning and editorial work for The Graduate magazine.

After six years at UCC, I joined Cork Chamber of Commerce as Membership Development & PR Manager, where I was once again responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of membership development.

In 2012, after a few freelance projects (including in UCC’s media office), I founded Lucy O’Donoghue Consulting. I specialise in marketing, mentoring, project management, PR, and strategic planning. I work closely with start-ups, SMEs, and large organisations to deliver tailored, results-driven support – from launching campaigns and managing events to mentoring and planning business strategies.

Networking has always been central to my career. I’m an active member of Cork and Ballincollig Business Associations, where I enjoy collaborating and supporting the local business community.

Your Female Founder Journey:
Founding my business wasn’t part of a master plan; it happened organically. I needed to step back from a hectic career and reflect on what I truly enjoy, who I want to work with, and how I want to manage my time.

The support I received when starting out was invaluable. I knew my experience, expertise and strong network in the Irish business community would continue to open doors – and it has.

I often encourage others to step outside their comfort zones and follow their dreams. Membership organisations are fantastic for promoting your business and connecting with others. What you put in, you’ll get back – and support from fellow business owners is always there.

How has being part of the AwakenHub community helped your business?
I recently attended a Start-Up Stroll in Cork and received a very warm welcome from Sinéad and Breda. I loved the energy, the openness, and the shared sense of support. It felt right to get involved, and I joined immediately. I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

Any ‘ask’ for the AwakenHub community?
I would welcome the opportunity to chat with members about how I may bring value to their business – a walk, coffee, phone or virtual call, whatever suits over the summer.

As a founder, what are your non-negotiables? What values or principles do you live by? Who or what inspires you?
Trust is fundamental in my work – clients share a lot of confidential information with me, and good relationships are key.

I always trust my gut – it has never let me down.

Authenticity is everything. Being genuine attracts the right clients, and what you see in person and online is the real me.

Where do you see yourself in 12 months and 5 years?
Each year, I look for a new work-related challenge to push myself out of my comfort zone.

In five years, I hope to be planning for a very early retirement – that’s the dream!

Top Three Tips for Other Women Founders:

  1. Record and celebrate your wins – no matter how small. Give yourself a high five.

  2. Schedule “walk and talks” to boost creativity, reduce stress, support wellbeing, and solve problems.

  3. Build your own unofficial board of directors (not family). They’ll be there to advise and support you when things get tough.

Six Words to Live By:
Connect, focus, trust, grow, reflect and celebrate.

Any additional comments?
What you put into any relationship or professional membership is what you will get back. Other business owners will support you – that has been my experience.
