Open Doors & Opportunity: In conversation with Claire Cronin
At AwakenHub, we’re driven by stories that blend grit with grace — the kind that show leadership isn’t just about titles, but about showing up, building bridges, and making space for others. In our latest online community event, we were joined by Claire Cronin, the former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, for a conversation that was full of insight, heart, and humour.
Claire’s story isn’t one of straight lines or early ambition — it’s one of service, instinct, and stepping up when the moment calls. A lawyer, mediator, and lifelong public servant, Claire entered politics at 52 and became the first woman Majority Leader in the Massachusetts House. Then, unexpectedly, came the call to serve as Ambassador.
“I never set out to become an ambassador — but I’ve always believed in doing the work, listening deeply, and showing up with integrity.”
Leading with purpose
From the moment Claire landed in Ireland, her mission was clear: to connect with people on the ground. Not just government leaders or business execs — but teachers, students, first responders, and the community at large.
That led to the creation of Open Door — a programme that welcomed more than 5,000 people into the Ambassador’s Residence, many from marginalised or underrepresented groups. Each week, groups were invited not only to tour the home, but to talk, ask questions, and imagine what was possible.
“If I’d walked by that house as a kid, I would’ve wondered what went on inside. I wanted to demystify it — and make people feel like they belonged.”
From legislation to lived experience
Claire’s experience in politics was shaped by policy — but grounded in people. One standout story she shared was about filing a bill to introduce an angel investor tax credit in Massachusetts — something she championed after seeing firsthand the challenges (and risks) faced by early-stage startups, including many women-led ones.
With her husband a seasoned entrepreneur and her daughter working at a startup incubator, Claire saw how vital early funding is — and how tax incentives could help tip the scales.
“I figured — if I’m going to talk about supporting business, I better walk the walk. And I did.”
Ireland & the U.S. — more than shared roots
Claire reflected on the unique ties between Ireland and the U.S., from history and heritage to trade and innovation. But she made it clear: relationships like this don’t sustain themselves on nostalgia alone. They need nurturing, and they need relevance.
With one in four six-year-olds in Ireland now having a parent born abroad, Claire spoke about the importance of helping today’s generation form their own connections — independent of ancestry.
“Heritage is our foundation — but trade, collaboration and mutual respect are the glue.”
What’s next?
Claire’s now back in Boston, working in public policy and continuing her support for women-led businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. She’s also stepping into education as a visiting scholar — something she discovered a deep passion for during her time mentoring students in Ireland.
“It turns out teaching doesn’t feel like work. It feels like joy.”
Advice for changemakers
Claire shared a lot of wisdom throughout the session — drawn from years in public life, politics, and diplomacy. Her takeaways?
